The Covenant for a New America project bears the same name as a 2005 conference sponsored by Sojourners magazine, a “Faith Summit on Poverty”, whose intention was “to move beyond the debate between left and right by seeking to create a common commitment to identify, pursue, and bring about real solutions to poverty” (https://sojo.net/magazine/february-2006/covenant-new-america). Among the keynote speakers was President-to-be Barack Obama, whose address can be read here: https://sojo.net/articles/transcript-obamas-2006-sojournerscall-renewal-address-faith-and-politics – or watched on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCZOyGIKp_E.
The similarity of names is purely coincidental: We learned of the 2005 conference after receiving guidance to name this project “Covenant for a New America”. However, we are honored by the similarity as well, as this project is informed by a core motivation similar to that of the 2005 conference: That God’s covenant with humankind be expressed here on Earth through our commitment to govern ourselves with fairness, justice, and a generosity of spirit extending to all.
